Itching for a deeper dive into the arts during the Real to Reel Film Festival?

Saugatuck Center for the Arts has got you covered. Alongside our slate of screenings, we’ve lined up an array of events, discussions, live music, and… exhibits.

Marking the opening of Real to Reel, two new exhibitions are set to debut in the SCA’s main and corridor galleries, and will be on display during the festival.

Winner of the 2018 ArtPrize Installation Public Vote Award, Megan Constance Altieri’s Sonder (Main Gallery, March 27 – May 24) plumbs the abundance and richness of individual lives. Altieri hand stamps snippets of conversation, collected randomly throughout her day, onto articles of found clothing which she suspends across the gallery from a clothesline. Alone, each piece reflects a moment that stands as a totem of an entire life; together, they inspire communion and connection over our shared humanity.

“Sonder illustrates the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as our own,” says Altieri in her statement on the work. “In our awareness of even a single other person we begin to grasp the magnitude of the 7.6 billion coexisting realities all as specific and important as one another.”

In A Pursuit to Stay Wild (Corridor Gallery, March 13 – May 24) is a highlight reel of professional photographer Cam McLeod’s most recent work. This polished body of imagery is an extension of Cam’s portfolio projects and travels; a visual love letter to adventurous spirits, adrenaline action and our nation’s most glorious landscapes.

“Photography is my life. It keeps my curiosity alive and provides me the opportunity to act on those curiosities,” says McLeod. “Any other deduction of it is too existential for me. My hope is that people gain a better understanding of myself, my culture, and the people I’m photographing. It’s that simple.

Cam’s crisp fine art display marries jaw-dropping views and unimaginable heights with the unique spirit of our local community. His work is informed both by his time growing up in Holland, Michigan running barefoot along the sandy shores of Lake Michigan and winters skiing at Bittersweet.

Last, but certainly not least, is our 2020 Real to Reel poster artist Anthony Zart, a Cleveland-based designer, illustrator, and author. Design lead by day, artistic factotum by night, Zart lets his passion run freely through his many projects, from illustrating children’s books to whipping up art for craft breweries. Prints of his Real to Reel poster will be for sale during the Opening Night reception & afterparty and throughout the festival.

Speaking of the Opening Night events, the details are as follows. On Friday, March 27, from 5-7 PM, things kick off with a reception open to the public. Wander through the galleries, get inspired, cozy up by one of our outdoor fire pits, mix & mingle, quench your thirst and fill your belly. A cash bar and local vendors will be available. At 7, it’s the regional premiere of Real to Reel feature film By Hand. Then, from 9:30-11, cut loose at our afterparty (free with film ticket, $8.50 without). Meet our featured artists, sip a cocktail, local cider or a special collab brew with Saugatuck Brewing Company and the SCA, and tap your toes to the roots music of the Mark Lavengood Band.

Real to Reel Film Festival is West Michigan’s premiere film festival centered around humanity’s connection to the outdoors. Featuring films from Mountainfilm on Tour alongside events, discussions, parties and live music, Real to Reel offers contemplative, inspiring and entertaining perspectives on a variety of topics.
