Summer in the Studio
Each summer we offer a small selection of intimate concerts in our performance studio.
Musicians perform a stripped down show that highlights the beauty of live music.
Our 2019 Summer in the Studio lineup has been announced!
THE HUMMINGBIRDS | MONDAY, JULY 8, 8:00 PM
The Hummingbirds, S.G. and Rachel Wood, were born and raised in Detroit, and now reside in Tampa. Their music is both northern and southern Americana, blending both grit, and self-reliance with hospitality, and charm. They play old guitars through old amps, bang drums, and even pluck banjos at times. Their live stage chemistry and organic duo harmonies immediately captivate and charm audience members. What comes out in their songwriting is a hybrid sound all their own: genuine & playful, earnest & soulful. Their songs twist through tales of loss & heartache, while others whisper sounds of hope, love, and journeys from the road.
CLAIRE WELLIN | MONDAY, JULY 22, 8:00 PM
Violinist, vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, and actor, Claire Wellin, returns to the SCA for a special solo performance. (Claire appeared in Mason Street Warehouse’s 2018 production of Once, as well as on Broadway and the Once national tour.) Stylistic intersectionality incorporating folk, jazz, and classical influences informs her take on singer-songwriter vulnerability with a type of understated theatricality. Multi-talented, she also leads the ghost folk band Youth in a Roman Field. She has worked as an arranger, writer, and performer on records and short films, is also a member of the Brooklyn-based rock band San Fermin and has contributed to the bands Glad Fanny, 2/3 Goat, The Jamie Elman Trio, and Delta Rae.
MARYA GRANDY | MONDAY, JULY 29, 8:00 PM
Following her sold-out concerts in Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York, Jeff-Award-nominated actor Marya Grandy (Les Miserable, The Great American Trailer Park Musical, Closer Than Ever) returns to Saugatuck with Marya Grandy: Live from the SCA. Grandy performs an evening of musical theatre songs, with an emphasis on new and undiscovered gems – and even a premiere or two. With music direction by Jeff Award Winner and Mason Street Warehouse/SCA favorite, Tom Vendafreddo (Murder For Two, Hempy Keyboard Series), Marya Grandy: Live from the SCA marks Grandy’s solo concert return to Saugatuck. SPOILER ALERT: There will be belting. There may be crying. There will be no drink maximum.
CHRIS BLISSET | MONDAY, AUGUST 5, 8:00 PM
The Songs of Dylan, Bowie, and Cohen. A long-time favorite of Mason Street Warehouse audiences and music lovers around the area, Chris Blisset returns to Saugatuck to pay homage to three heroes of American music. In honor of Bob Dylan’s Nobel prize win, and in memory of music icon Leonard Cohen, and the late great David Bowie, Chris returns to Saugatuck with guitar and harmonica in hand. “Red” offers us some selections from each of these song-writing giants while sharing with us stories of
JAIME MARVIN | MONDAY, AUGUST 19, 8:00 PM
A staple of the Michigan music scene, including Mackinac Island during the summers, Michigan artist Jamie Marvin, brings her diverse repertoire to the SCA. Her musical influences are from a vast array of genres and she pulls a unique element out of each of them to create her own flavor. An accomplished vocalist, guitarist, percussionist, Master Luthier, and songwriter, Jaime is, in a word, raw… what you see is what you get. When she plays, her music touches your soul; she feels every chord, every note, and so do you.
