Lola/Simon
A prize fighter draped in satin. He is a heterosexual cross dresser…eccentric, lavish and outspoken. An emotionally and physically challenging role that requires the body of a boxer with the soul of a Diva. Must have star presence and feel comfortable wearing everything from full drag performer to nothing but boxing trunks. Must have a killer voice with power blues and gospel chops. Written for a non-Caucasian (generally African heritage) male. (high tenor… Sings C3–B4 with one top C) Must move extremely well in high-heals, wigs and women’s clothing.
Charlie Price
A confused young man who inherits his father’s shoe factory. He’s unfocused and misguided but is a hero under a victim’s mantle. He is handsome and loveable but there is a temper right under the skin. High tenor rock belt. Sings C3–B4
Young Charlie
A joyous young chap…the younger version of our main character. He is lost, quiet and unsure. He appears in the opening and closing sequences of the show. Must be able to sing.
Young Simon
This is Lola/Simon as a 10-year-old boy. Inquisitive and not shy, he knows his destiny at an early age. Actor must be comfortable wearing women’s high heels. Appears in the opening and closing sequences of the show. Must be able to sing.
Nicola/Others
Charlie’s long-term girlfriend. Attractive and smart. She is driven and uncompromising. High pop belt.
Lauren
A beautiful, strong and outspoken working-class girl. She works in the shoe factory and has a huge crush on Charlie. Must be a strong comedic actress with a high pop belt. Sings B♭3–F♯5
Don/Others
A hypermasculine bear of a factory worker and Lola’s nemesis. He has a menacing physicality but ends up being a teddy bear. Sings C3–F4 (must have a strong falsetto to D5 for the Finale).
Pat/Others
The shoe factory’s officious office manager who will let loose when given the chance. Lola’s love interest.
Trish/Others
Factory worker with a family to worry about. Old school and set in her ways…a bit of a broad…but comes around in the end.
Angels
These are the drag personalities that populate The Blue Angel night club in London. Must be excellent dancers in heals and be able to sing extremely well (high pop). Previous drag experience helpful but not necessary. Acrobatics a plus.
