Saugatuck, MI — Saugatuck Center for the Arts welcomes back live theatre this summer… outdoors! BYOC (Bring Your Own Chair) for three fabulous Mason Street Warehouse productions performed on our renovated and refreshed outdoor plaza stage. That means more green space, more fun with friends, and more world-class entertainment. So, grab a drink from the bar and settle in for an evening of breezes off the river and sunset-streaked skies.

Live performance has long been a staple of the Saugatuck-Douglas art scene. The SCA is proud to lead the way and safely support this vibrant and important part of our community.

“Last summer’s outdoor concerts and films were a fantastic dress rehearsal for this summer,” said SCA Executive Director Kristin Armstrong. “So we converted our parking lot into a flexible, multi-purpose plaza. We’re now able to host theatre, concerts, markets, classes, special events – and still park on it when needed. Guests will have a fresher, much lovelier experience in the reimagined space.”

SCA Artistic Director Kurt Stamm said the ongoing COVID situation pushed SCA leadership to get creative outdoors again this summer. “Public health constraints are continually evolving and, while we hope it gets more and more open throughout the summer, by planning outdoor events we have maximum flexibility to safely serve the most guests.”

Rather than traditional auditions in New York City and Chicago, this year, actors auditioned for Stamm virtually, with more than 3,000 actors submitting. “The pandemic has been incredibly difficult for professional actors — most haven’t worked in more than a year,” Stamm said. “We had incredible talent to choose from for these productions and it’s exciting to bring them to Saugatuck this summer!”

Stamm noted that the outdoor plaza stage is smaller than the indoor theater stage which has limited cast sizes, but not the scope and energy of performances. This year guests will see original sets, unique lighting design, and bold costumes during all of the shows. What’s more, live musicians will accompany the musical productions.

Without further ado – (drum roll, please) – we present the 2021 Mason Street Warehouse season!

For anyone who has ever felt like they don’t matter, Dixie’s Tupperware Party is a Southern tale of empowerment that leaves your heart a little bigger and your food a little fresher.
