LEARN BY DOING

The SCA has built a series of innovative educational programs for k-12th students that expose young people to important arts and cultural opportunities along with crucial project-based learning. Schools participate free of charge. In addition, we offer transportation funding to bus students to the SCA.

BEYOND THE BOOKS

Students benefit from our programs by: learning more deeply and retaining more of what they learn through project-based, hands-on programs; improving critical soft skills needed for employment success; working with professional artists/creatives; experiencing film, music, design and visual art which enables them to compete with peers from better equipped school districts (when applying for jobs, internships and college).

ARTS INTEGRATED PROGRAMMING

GROWING YOUNG ARTISTS

Growing Young Artists (GYA) is a project-based learning program that uses art & creativity to deliver key skills to Pre-K through 8th-grade students.

Our GYA instructors work hand-in-hand with educators in Fennville’s migrant summer school program, creating programming to reinforce skills including literacy, language fluency, math, and science along with critical life skills like problem-solving, teamwork, empathy, and social etiquette.

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

We give students opportunities to learn from and work alongside professional creatives through our Artist in Residence programs. Residencies range from 1-day intensives to 3-week programs like Growing Young Artists.

Residencies include active teaching and hands-on projects plus opportunities to exhibit artwork at the SCA. Past Artists in Residence have included Ruben Aguirre, Jason Wesaw, Sofia Ramirez Hernandez, Tim Folkert, Michael McGillis, Salvador Jimenez-Flores, and Donna St. John.

CHILDREN’S FILM FESTIVAL

We are fortunate to have a partnership with Mountainfilm on Tour, showing their films for young viewers.

The film festival is all about creative, inspirational storytelling via short documentaries that share tales from around the world; stories of friendship, persistence, vision, courage, exploration, and much more.  We share a post-festival curriculum for teachers so students can continue talking about and learning from the screening.

EXHIBITION PROGRAMMING

The SCA is a catalyst for advancing arts education and an active partner in the economic and cultural life of the West Michigan community; inviting discovery, creativity and learning through engagement with the arts.

The SCA’s is committed to inspire and engage people of all ages, abilities, and economic means in creativity through our exhibitions, interdisciplinary educational programs and events. The SCA provides a platform for artists, arts enthusiasts and students to come together to explore, celebrate and cherish the creative spark that lives within us all.
