A crankie is a moving panorama made with an illustrated scroll, dowels, a box, and of course, a crank! Usually accompanied by music and narration, crankies have been used for centuries to tell epic tales. Children will start off their first day with a visit to The Saugatuck and Douglas Historical Center’s brand new “Then and Now” exhibit. There they will learn about unique local history. Back at the SCA children will collaborate using their best artsy and storytelling skills to transfer local lore into compelling crankies.
Here is a video of an elaborate crankie, but it gives you can idea of what a crankie actually is.
