SUMMER, 2018

The countdown is on for the arrival of our summer Artist in Residence, Victoria Martinez. Victoria is scheduled to arrive in Saugatuck the second week of July to work with Growing Young Artists (GYA) program. Her work is also on display for the community in the corridor exhibit Fiber Nation.

Victoria is a Chicago artist and educator who explores textiles, installation art, site-specific experiments, printmaking and painting. She believes that fabric is a universal material that connects us despite different backgrounds. Her works vary in scale from intimate works to large public installations. Victoria has a passion for community and collaboration that is unmatched and is dedicated to using her artistic talents for good.

According to Sixty Inches From Center, a non-profit online arts publication, “Martinez embodies artistic process and thinking into every aspect of her life, embedding an infectious energy and a pure passion for art in her surroundings. Her inclusive way of researching, making and teaching open up avenues for expansive thinking, collective making and accessing tools for expression.”

GYA uses art as a medium for learning far beyond the traditional textbook with Pre-K through 8th-grade migrant and Title 1 summer school students. Victoria will work alongside students in exploring fiber and weaving. Over the three weeks of the GYA program students will create large collaborative unity flags as well as one-of-a-kind flags that represent the world they want to live in, and the person that they want to become.

“I feel as if this youth audience is often overlooked, and I’m grateful to collaborate with them exploring techniques and socio-emotional learning. It’s my responsibility as an artist to share my knowledge with young people and help them communicate their feelings through interactive art experiences,” said Victoria.

We are so excited to have Victoria’s talent and passion this summer. The final installation of GYA will be on display August 1st from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in downtown Fennville during the GYA Celebrando Un Mundo!
